Prendre une position épistémique dans l’interaction. Les marqueurs du savoir, du non-savoir et du doute en français” [Taking an Epistemic Stance in Interaction. Markers of Knowing, Ignoring and Doubting in French] is a SNF-funded 4-year research project whose goal is to provide a systematic and multimodal study of French epistemic and evidential markers as emerging in a 28h video-recorded corpus documenting public debates, TV debates, and work meetings [project 188924, POSEPI; 2020-2024]. More precisely, the project identifies, annotates, and examines a lot of different French epistemic and evidential markers (n=3727) in context, and not by using only invented or decontextualized examples. The project integrates the multimodal dimension of French epistemic markers, by analysing patterns of gaze direction or gestures that cooccur with the epistemic and evidential markers. Using mixed methods applied to Corpus Pragmatics, the project combines quantitative overviews, that are statistically robust, with more fine-grained qualitative explorations.
