Glossary

Glossary

Key terms and concepts for archiving humanities research data with DaSCH.

A

Anonymization

Removing identifying information from research data, in case it contains personal data or sensitive data. See also Pseudonymization.

API (Application Programming Interface)

A set of protocols and tools that allows different software applications to communicate with each other.

Archival Platform

A system designed for long-term data preservation, including storage infrastructure, access interfaces, and preservation workflows.

ARK (Archival Resource Key)

A URI which serves as a persistent identifier for information objects on the internet.

Authorship

The natural person who created a work.

C

Cardinality

In a data model, the cardinalities define exactly which properties can or must be attached to a resource.

CARE Principles

Framework for data management: Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, Ethics. See also FAIR Principles.

CIDOC-CRM

Extensible ontology which has emerged as an international standard for the exchange of cultural heritage information.

Class (Resource Class)

The type of a resource. For example, "Mozart" is a resource instance of the class "Composer".

Controlled Vocabulary (List)

A standardized and organized list of words and phrases used to index, categorize, and retrieve information, ensuring consistency and accuracy by restricting the terms that can be used. For example, you can define that the property "hasColor" can only have the values "green", "blue", or "red".

The person or institution who owns the economic rights of a work. Can be the original author (see Authorship) or the funding institution.

Creative Commons

Organization designing open licenses, such as CC BY.

D

DaSCH (Swiss National Data and Service Center for the Humanities)

A repository (long-term archive) for research data from the humanities. A national research data infrastructure in the humanities domain providing a range of services to researchers.

Data Depositor

A researcher or institution that archives their data with DaSCH's repository service.

Data Minimization

Collecting only personal data that is absolutely necessary for the research objectives.

Data Model

Formalized description of the structure of research data, consisting of resource classes and properties.

Deposit Agreement

A legal contract between researchers and DaSCH defining the terms for depositing data into the DSP system.

DMP (Data Management Plan)

A formal document that outlines how research data will be handled during and after a project.

DSP (DaSCH Service Platform)

DaSCH Service Platform - DaSCH's archiving platform providing long-term storage with web-based access interfaces (DSP-APP) and API access (DSP-API), accessible at app.dasch.swiss.

DSP-API

The backend software of DSP, which allows other programs to interact with DaSCH's repository.

DSP-APP

The browser application at app.dasch.swiss which allows humans to interact with DaSCH's repository.

DSP-TOOLS

A command-line tool developed by DaSCH to interact with DSP in an automated way (create and get data model, upload of big quantities of data).

F

FAIR Principles

Framework for data management: Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable. See also CARE Principles.

G

Graph Database

A database that uses graph structures with nodes and edges to represent and store data. See also RDF.

GUI (Graphical User Interface)

A computer program with a visual interface, targeted at human users.

I

ICF (Informed Consent Form)

Written consent form signed by the participant to confirm that their personal data will be published.

IIIF (International Image Interoperability Framework)

A standard to publish images online, enabling interoperability across various institutions and repositories.

K

Knowledge Hub

DaSCH's comprehensive resource center providing guides, tutorials, recipes, best practices, and reference materials for researchers archiving humanities data.

L

License

A contract between the economic owner of a work and the general public which defines the terms under which the work may be used, distributed, or modified.

List (Controlled Vocabulary)

A standardized and organized list of words and phrases used to index, categorize, and retrieve information, ensuring consistency and accuracy by restricting the terms that can be used. For example, you can define that the property "hasColor" can only have the values "green", "blue", or "red". See also Controlled Vocabulary.

M

Mass Import

The process of uploading large datasets into the DSP system in bulk rather than individually.

Metadata

Accompanying data that describes your research data. DaSCH publishes metadata about every project at meta.dasch.swiss.

O

Ontology

A set of concepts and categories in a subject area or domain that shows their properties and the relations between them.

P

Personal Data

Information relating to an identifiable natural person (might or might not be sensitive data). See also Anonymization, Informed Consent Form.

Property

Information attached to a resource. For example, a resource of the type "Author" has a date-property "birthday" and an integer-property "numberOfWorks".

Pseudonymization

Replacing identifying information with made-up values, in case it contains personal data or sensitive data. See also Anonymization.

R

RDF (Resource Description Framework)

A method to describe and exchange graph data. DaSCH's database is a graph database built upon RDF.

Repository

A central location in which scholarly data is stored and managed. DSP is a repository for research data from the humanities.

Resource (Resource Instance)

A record or object stored in DSP. Must be of a certain type. For example, the resource "Mozart" is an instance of the class "Composer".

S

Sensitive Data

Information that could be abused to damage a natural person. See also Personal Data, Anonymization, Informed Consent Form.

Static Website

A website consisting of pre-built HTML/CSS/JavaScript files, without database or server-side logic. Can be archived at DaSCH, as opposed to dynamic websites.

T

TEI (Text Encoding Initiative)

A standard for the representation of literary or historical texts, together with annotations and markup.
